Google Voice incoming caller id shows my cell phone number?

I just got a Google Voice number. When someone calls my Google number, my cell phone rings and displays MY cell phone number as the caller id. It does not show the callers number.





I have my Google Voice settings to display the callers number, and the voice mail recognized this person in my gmail contacts.





I love this thing but it's not going to worgm ailI don't know who is calling!

Randy Weber|||It's not supposed to show your cell phone caller ID. The only 2 options are to show the callers number or your Google Voice number.





Try setting up another phone on your Google Voice and see if the problem is also found using another phone. Otherwise, you'll need to go into the help forum for Google Voice and ask a Google employee for help.

If you can't answer the call on the broken phone you won't be able to verify it and, even if you could verify it, it won't work with Google Voice either. You can always forward the calls from the broken phone to your other cell/home/work number temporarily and you can verify it that way But again it won't help you use it on the broken phone. The simplest solution is do nothing for now - wait till you get the new phone.

If I understand what it is you are trying to ask, can you use your mobile phone number that was provided by your phone's carrier with Google Voice? Yes, IF you had ported that number earlier to Google Voice, otherwise you will have to create a NEW phone number to be used with your Google Voice account.





If your Android based phone is using T-Mobile or AT%26amp;T, then take out that SIM card and place it into another GSM based phone that works for that carrier. Then log into your Google Voice account and link that phone number to your GV account. Once that has been done, you can take the SIM card out and you can make and receive calls via GV.

Why Google voice just for US not for others ?

Google started their new service called google voice qhich is a great service but why they launched it just in US , and i have no idea whats wrong with them , if they can trace the IP and figure out from where the account is created why don't they do it while sending invites , it really sucks when you do get an invite and still can't create an account and use the service , this it disgraceful :-(|||Once invited, you use a US zip code to get a list of available numbers in your peticular zip code. Google only has access to available numbers in the US obviously because google is based in the us. Im sure there are tons of restrictions and red tape google would have to go through to get access to other countries zip codes, or equivalent thereof, and gain access to unused telephone numbers in said "zip code" areas.





And hulu cant do anything because of copyright restrictions on the content they show. Most the shows on hulu are based in America. Why else would there be different dvd country regions and release dates? Same thing with hulu.|||You can create an account. You'll probably get an invite after a few weeks from what I've heard, but you won't be able to do anything with the account if you're not in the United States.


I used to have an account with Grandcentral that worked fine with my Canadian phone number. Once Google bought them, they invited me to "migrate" to Google Voice. The problem is that now it will no longer let me use my phone number, and I can't revert back to Grandcentral! It's really annoying. Hopefully they'll expand soon.





These online American companies are really weird...they're all obsessed with "region restricions" like Google Voice, Hulu, and others. It's really dumb...companies from other countries don't do that...it's some asinine elitist American crap.|||Google Voice is currently invitation only.


And possible they are only able to give out US numbers at this time.





Google does attend to begin support for additional countries but there is no time-frame at this time.

I prefer google voice because it has better rates|||Well... Skype has a better platform for 1to1 communication and is versatile on most devices. For example.. I use skype and recently they came out with a new version which works on the iPhone. So now, I skype my girlfriend to her PC from my phone while on the road because she doesn't have an iPhone.





As far as the paid features go, I have no idea, I didn't know google HAD paid features.|||Yes, I've used both skype and google voice. I also did some research regarding features as a free platform and for versatility and skype exceeded my expectations.

You can use Google Talk to make phone calls (this is tied to your Google Voice account) within your browser if you are using Chrome for example (I have not tried to use other browsers for this task, so I can't make a judgement one way or the other). Simply access your Gmail and make a phone call, make sure that you have a working microphone and speakers (doesn't matter if you use a headset or if you have both the speakers and microphone built into the computer).

Any phone calls you make from your cell phone will appear as your cell number. The only way you can send calls using your google voice number is through a google voice app on your cell phone, or placing a call via http://voice.google.com

Click that, select your carrier, then put whatever you need to into your phone (probably just *73).





When you initially enabled GVoice, the instructions had you dial a number which enabled no answer/ignore call forwarding to your GV number (or GV's access number), now you need to 'Un-forward' it by hitting *73 call on your phone.





If that doesn't work, you'll most likely have to contact your carrier and ask them to cancel the Conditional Call Forwarding (or give you the code to do it yourself).

You get a GV phone number, say 123-4567.


Your cell phone is 444-4444 and your home landline is 555-5555 and your work number is 666-6666. If someone calls 123-4567 it will ring 444, 555, and 666.


So, you see, you only need the GV number for the rest of your life. Change cell phone providers and your friends don't need to know that you have a new cell phone number. Just change it in GV and it will ring your new number.


The service also allows free long distance calling, but it's only free from a home landline.


I tried to get friends interested in GV, but they just didn't care. Basically, no one wants to go to the hassle of telling people to start calling this new 123 number. I think this service ain't going to be doing a whole lot for you.|||I don't know if anyone will respond to this but it seems to me that after looking into how Google Voice works exactly, one can actually make and recieve unlitmited calls for free even from a cell phone, with the combination of certiain plans (such as MyFaves) by adding your GV # to your MyFaves.

|||When they say Google Voice is free, they mean the service itself. When you make phone calls, whatever plan you use already, is still the one you use. They just mean it's no additional charge to get Google Voice.





In your situation, even if you only have one cell, there is still much you can do with it. The first thing is getting a Google Voice number. That alone is a nice feature because 1. You get to pick your own number, 2. That number will never change. So you can continue to give out your Google Voice number to your contacts without having to worry that they won't be able to contact you if you switch phones/get a new cell number. All you have to do is change your cell phone's number on your Google Voice account.

I use Google Voice, I switched from my iPhone on AT%26amp;T to a Droid on Verizon. When I got my phone number from Verizon, I basically tossed it away, I don't need it and for a year now, I don't even know my own number from Verizon... instead, I use only my Google Voice account.





The reason is that I always have my voicemails transcribed and emailed to me. They show as "visual voicemail", and I don't even have a text messaging plan, I get unlimited and free text messaging through Google Voice, the catch is that I have to have a data plan. Again, I get unlimited calling minutes to anywhere, anytime within the United States, Canada and Mexico, I only pay 2 cents a minute calling Europe, this means that I don't have to pay Verizon for outrages international calling.

Can't people just use one number on their own?|||The point of GOOG voice is to simply give you the flexibility of taking calls made to the google # on any of the lines (your cell, your home phone, your vacation house phone, etc) you choose to connect it to.





If you're under the assumption that there's cell coverage everywhere, you've been mistaken. Verizon has the largest and most extensive network, but even Verizon has holes (very few, but nonetheless). If you are on AT%26amp;T or T-Mo, you've got to work on a pretty crappy network. So, you ask your buddies to call your google voice # instead of calling your cell. That way, when you are at home or near a landline, you can take your call on that without having to worry about reception.

had previously downloaded the talkatone app. It recently stopped working for me. I just downloaded the google voice app on my itouch. I have a gmail account, but for some reason, it will not sign into my account. Can I use Google Voice on the EVO with out the phone being activated with sprint?

I have a HTC EVO for sprint and i havent activated it yet. So it has no number and no coverage. All i have is some data from WiFi. I was wondering if i can use the Google Voice to recieve incoming calls even though that phone is not currently activated?|||Answer is no (at the moment at least). The only way to make outgoing Google Voice calls outside of a land/cell line is via Google Talk or Browser (via Gmail) at the moment. Google Voice on Android merely initiates a cellular call using your Voice number as the point of origin.

1) I used to have a "stalker" ex-girlfriend, she kept calling and calling, and my cell phone provider only allows me to save voice mail messages for two weeks, I needed a more permanent solution (Google Voice saves voice mail forever until I decide to delete them).





2) I have been in some financial difficulty (economic crisis), and I could not afford to pay my cell phone bill, however, one requires at least voice mail when looking for work. Even though my cell phone got cut off, I could still make and receive calls (online, similar to Skype), and always have voice mail available for those who called me.





3) Google Voice allows you to filter incoming calls, you can setup "groups" such as "friends" "family", etc. So, I can ensure that my mother can always access me, making my phone ring when she calls, but if a caller who is not in any of my "permitted list" calls, they go straight to voice mail, this was a very useful tool when I wasn't paying my bills (due to lack of money) and creditors kept calling non-stop, since they were calling my Google Voice number, they went straight to voice mail.





4) There are other uses for it, I like that I don't have to pay for text messaging (free unlimited text messaging with Google Voice). This too saves me some money each month by not needing a text message plan with Verizon (my cell phone carrier). So, I can send text messages via my Android based phone, or use Google's email service Gmail to send and receive for free.

Is there a way to toggle between a Google Voice number and my phone number?

I have my original number and a Google Voice number. Is there a way I can toggle between the two. For example, for work, is there a way to "turn on" or use my Google voice number and for personal, I can use my personal number? Or possibly a way to turn off Google Voice as an option. I know that you can turn GV on and off by turning off call forwarding or sending people who call your GV number straight to voicemail.





If your calling a Business Contact and you dont want them to have your real number, the only way I know of doing this is if that person left you a voice message and you press 2 to call them back, Or call them from your computer

2) Enter your email address as your email username and password


3) Click on the circular icon (settings) on the top right hand of the page and choose voice settings


4) Uncheck foward calls to your sprint phone number. This will no longer foward any calls to your sprint phone number. You can also delete your sprint number this way it won't ever forward any calls.


5) Click on voicemail and text tab. Here you can delete your personal voice mail greeting in google voice.

I would like to get a motorola droid x. There is a google voice application. What i would like to do is get a new phone number and import my old number into the phone. It looks really cool!|||If you had an account on Grand Central it will transfer to Google Voice so just sign-in on Grand Central and it will tell you how to upgrade. Otherwise there is no current time line for opening up the invitations. Current members can't send out invitations yet like they did with Grand Central.|||Thank you very much.

How do you plug in an actual house phone to use Google voice?

I just recently signed up for google voice and i wanted to use an actual house phone because i dont have a mic. Can i use a a home phone and plug in my computer or something? Do i have to have a USB phone which by the way i dont know what the hell it is. Any help would be good. Please and Thank you(:|||My suggestion is get a $20-$30 webcam with mic combo and use that. Or get a regular hosue phone.|||Unfortuantly its not that straight forward if you wanted to use your standard home telephone you would need a special adapter and thats just the start of it.

Looks like you are USA based if you really want to use a standard house phone you will need a VOIP compatible one but you will need a tech guy to help setting it up for sure!

computer- you go to google.com/voice (you should have your account set up if your asking this question.) then it will say call on the left hand side you click on that and type in a phone number this will call your phone when you answer it will start ringing this is google voice forwarding you to the number you called i no kind of stupid but thats what it does wanna make a call from your computer go to googles gmail (hopefully you have a gmail account cuz google rocks) on the left can side it says "call phone" on the left to the bottom of the options where all your contacts are click on that and type in the number you want to call (this is free to anyone in the u.s. land line or cell) you can call them right off your computer your number will not show up though just for a heads up)





if your trying to make a call off your phone well from what i no you cant it just goes right threw your phone thats the best i can answer that you can download skype pay a little for credits and call people threw skype if your calling there skype its free though hope this helps
